Beti Padhao Beti Bachao
For years, people have had a really dismissive attitude about the girl child in Indian society. They assume that girls in their lives are like burdens that just need to take their parents or husbands' entire lives and never give. In human society, less value of the girl child builds tension of life on earth, as where there are no females, there would be no new birth.
In order to curb the ever increasing gender gap and promote the education of girls while highlighting their potential as an individual and not mere the gender flag holder, ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, scheme was successfully launched by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22ndof January in 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. This scheme was started nationwide to benefit and educate the girl child, by rigorous prohibition of sex-selective abortion, implementation of Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Technique (PC-PNDT) and Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Acts, and public awareness.
Inexcusably, India has one-third of the world's 10 million child brides. Not just that, as the United Nations Population Fund results indicate, more than two-thirds of married women between the ages of 15 and 49 have been beaten and compelled to have intimate relations. India is growing rapidly and the obligation to ensure that all people participate in the process comes with growth.
If the people of India focus on changing their mindsets, we can only expect change, because only changing policies and making the laws gender-sensitive will not bring about the change we want to see in our society. Females are mostly restricted and do not have access to fair rights and privileges in some parts of India. One such effort to change the attitude is Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. This proposal resulted in a collaborative multi-stakeholder movement in a progressive direction that was led by the Chief Minister at the state level and the District Commissioners at the district level, predominantly ensuring strict execution of the scheme This included intervention by the departments of health, advancement of women and girls, education, police and prosecution.
For the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, the government has allocated 100 crore rupees and another 50 crore rupees will go towards women's public transport protection and 150 crore rupees in large cities towards women's safety. The Department of Women and Child Development held workshops to raise awareness, in addition to the initiatives by the above listed bodies, including the police and health department.
Although the scheme faces difficulties countering age old beliefs and practices such as dowry, child marriages, women to be limited to household chores, violence against females and most importantly women being considered a burden and hence, female foeticide.
Despite hurdles, this campaign can get a concrete form if right steps are undertaken. It has become imperative that as a full-fledged subject in the core curriculum, gender studies should be included. This will help kids build progressive ideas of gender roles. They should teach boys and young men how to value and respect women. Girls should be encouraged to speak up against any sort of violence through education.
A great example of the reduction of sex determination and other imbalances is the initiation of this system. As a result of global activism, girls' education has gained some attention. In addition, it is also helpful in giving social and financial freedom to girls.
